The inauguration of the Asia Pacific Master of Human Rights and Democratisation (APMA) Program 2022/23 was held with the participation of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Colombo and other dignitaries from relevant embassies on 17 February 2023 at 3.30 pm at the Senate Hall of the University of Colombo.
The programme was inaugurated with the welcome address by Professor (Chair) Wasantha Seneviratne, Director Centre for the Study of Human Rights. followed by the Addresses by Professor (Dr.) Sashika Manoratne, Director, International Unit, University of Colombo; Professor (Dr.) Nishantha Sampath Punchihewa, Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Colombo and Senior Professor (Chair) H.D. Karunaratne,Vice Chancellor, University of Colombo and was concluded with the vote of thanks by Hakeem Abu Backar, Deputy Director, Centre for the Study of Human Rights.
Asia Pacific program started in 2010 and year 2023 marks the 13th consecutive year of the program. Currently, the program runs with 5 partner universities, including the Mahidol University (Thailand) as the coordinating partner, University of Colombo (Sri Lanka), Universitas Gadjah Mada (Indonesia) and Kathmandu School of Law (Nepal) and the Ateneo de Manila Law School (the Philippines). APMA programme is co-funded by the European Commission through the European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights. The APMA degree offers students a unique opportunity to engage first-hand with regional and international human rights and democratisation issues, and to interact with internationally acclaimed academics, practitioners and experts.
The advantage of joining for Colombo second semester is that the international students have the opportunity to study with a group of local students who follow the same program.
This year, 05 students joined with Colombo for the second semester. Their nationalities are India, Nepal, Indonesia, Myanmar and The Philippines.
