“Ignorance of the law is not an excuse, so awareness and providing free legal aid are a must in our current society.”
The Centre for the Study of Human Rights was delighted to successfully deliver a free legal aid mobile camp Sivali Central College – Ratnapura with a focus on clinical legal education, partnering with law students, legal practitioners, the Rathnapura -Bar Association of Sri Lanka, Junior Bar of BASL, the Legal Aid Unit (LAU) and the Center for Environmental Law and Justice (CELP).
The Legal Aid Mobile Camp majored in providing free legal advice, referral service, documentation support, and consultancy on matters of different legal jurisprudence and support to the vulnerable communities in Rathnapura District, enabling them to assert their rights, seek redress, and access justice.
The objective of this clinical legal education exercise is to instill volunteerism and community learning among law students and to advance justice and diversity as fundamental values of legal education.
Taking part in this first of a series of legal aid camps, over 30 well known attorneys, 65 clients, and 130 law students actively attended. This is being facilitated by the European Union in Sri Lanka and the Maldives funded Support to Justice Sector Project #JURE implemented by Ministry of Justice – Sri Lanka, United Nations Development Programme – UNDP & UNICEF Sri Lanka.
