Centre for the Study of Human Rights and @Legal aid unit of the Faculty of Law – University of Colombo, delivered free legal aid and awareness initiatives in #Kurunegala on 22 March 2024. 80 law students from the University of Colombo facilitated the activities, while about 20 lawyers from the Bar Association of Sri Lanka #Kurunegala, volunteered their service, along with the @The Legal Aid Commission of Sri Lanka -LAC, #Kurunegala. A group of law students from the Department of Law, @University of Jaffna also voluntarily joined the event, to co-learn and explore opportunities of replicating the initiative.
More than 130 persons, mostly unemployed and retired persons, received free legal advice from the legal aid camp held in the Town Hall, Kurunegala, improving access to justice for the poor and persons in vulnerable situations. At the same time, about 50 law students from the University of Colombo and the University of Jaffna gained experience in clinical legal education, by facilitating and observing client consultations, under the guidance of senior legal practitioners.
This initiative was supported by the @European Union in Sri Lanka funded Support to Justice Sector (#JURE) project, jointly implemented by the #UNDP in Sri Lanka and #UNICEF Sri Lanka, under the facilitation of the @Ministry of Justice.
