The Free Legal Advice Camp for the underprivileged community in Beruwala was successfully hosted on 15 December 2024 at the Zam Refai Hajiyar Maha Vidyalaya, Beruwala. This impactful event was hosted collaboratively by the Centre for the Study of Human Rights (CSHR) and the Legal Aid Unit of the University of Colombo, aiming to provide essential legal assistance and raise awareness among the community.
This initiative was enabled by The Support to Justice Sector Project (JURE) which is funded by the European Union, jointly implemented by UNDP and UNICEF, and facilitated by the Ministry of Justice.
This impactful initiative brought together 10 experienced volunteer lawyers from the Legal Aid Commission and Kalutara Bar Association, Human Rights Officers from the Human Rights Commission, police officers, and 30 trained law students to provide crucial legal assistance to over 80 individuals. The attendees sought guidance on diverse legal issues including family disputes, maintenance, land disputes, workplace challenges, and human rights concerns.
Beyond offering advice, the camp ensured follow-up referrals and connected clients to essential services, reinforcing pathways for marginalized communities to seek justice. The camp highlighted the importance of collaboration and inclusivity in advancing justice and promoting legal empowerment for all. Together, we continue to build bridges to ensure that no one is left behind in their pursuit of justice.
