Child rights has evolved into a distinct academic discipline with theoretical and practical importance, drawing inspiration from several fields of study such as law, public administration, law enforcement, national security, public policy formulation and implementation etc. It has been an evolving academic subject in postgraduate levels in universities throughout the world.
The Postgraduate Diploma in Child Protection and Rights PGDip (CPR) is a postgraduate programme targeted at child protection sector, child rights and human rights activists, professionals engaged in protecting and promoting child rights and preventing child abuse in the society. ‘Rights of Children and their protection’ has been a key topic of interest among academics, administrators, policy makers, NGOs, INGOs, donor community and interested members of the civil society over the past years. This Programme is intended to provide and develop the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes in the area of child protection, rights and policy.

Academics, Government officers and law enforcing officers who deal with issues pertaining to children, personnel who engage in work in the child protection sector, child rights and human rights activists, journalists, teachers and other interested persons and professionals engaged in protecting and promoting child rights and preventing child abuse in the society and the interested members of civil society.
This course is designed based on the credit value system of Sri Lanka Qualification Framework Level 8 (SLQF 8) and it allows a candidate to earn 30 credits within the period of one year (01) by successfully completing eight (8) course modules.

- A bachelor’s degree from any recognized university or an equivalent qualification recognised by the University of Colombo;
(a) including 30 credits in the relevant subject area; or
(b) with prior learning/work experience equivalent to 30 credits in the relevant subject area;
OR
- An educational/professional qualification in the relevant subject area equivalent to 1(a) or 1(b) with prior learning/work experience which is acceptable to the Academic Committee of the CSHR, Faculty Board of the Faculty of Law and the Senate of the University of Colombo;
OR
- Completion of NVQ level 7, as determined by the Senate of the University of Colombo.
AND
A good knowledge of Sinhala/Tamil/English language as the case maybe and satisfactory performance at a selection test and/or selection interview.
The medium of instruction and examination shall be Sinhala, Tamil and English.

- To support and facilitate the internalization of ethics, values and fundamentals of the three core disciplines relating to child protection – child development, social work and law. In this regard the embodiment of fundamentals will be preferred to the memorization of contents.

- To equip candidates with the experiential and technical knowledge to think about and make sense of child development and those factors that undermine normal development.
- To provide clear tools, principles and methodologies for contributing to the processes of social protection and prevention.
- To provide a clear focus on the child in contact with the law to work effectively with different services and achieve better and positive outcomes.
- To develop a reflective practitioner of child protection who is able to work effectively at the social and legal levels of child protection and support the development of a system with a right based approach.
